Time-lapse means exactly the passage of time. Nothing more and nothing less. The conclusion is plane to see – every photo of the same object or model obviously qualifies to the category of time-lapse because it documents the passage of time. This is how the logic suggests. However, in photography and internet this term describes the making and assembling the set number of photographs into a whole giving the effect of accelerated passage of time. In fact, these are films - often well-fitted, with thoughtful script and direction. Advanced techniques, however, require the recording of even several thousand frames in order to obtain an effective film material lasting several seconds.
It should be known, however, that time-lapse is one of the oldest animation production techniques successfully used in documentary films for demonstrating the course of phenomena both in micro and macro scale, which due to their stretch in time are difficult for direct observation. The true charm of the phenomena can be appreciated only after looking at them at an accelerated pace. It's nothing else than a time-lapse movie.
However, before I focus myself on the subject of this relatively complicated topic, I would like to stop for a moment at the very beginning, that is, to record the passage of time by means of a few or a dozen or so shots. Imagine having a mother taking a photo of her child every year at a birthday party. She records these images because she wants to see how the child grew. More and more moms and dads decide to register the look of a future mother's figure before the baby appears in the world. This is the increasingly popular "belly photography". or family photos during holidays - the passage of time is also recorded on them. Often, these are the same locations from year to year, the same items of clothing. This is nothing else than time-lapse. If we take care of precise reproduction and accuracy of details, we will achieve an interesting and sometimes surprising effect. There is a number of opportunities that you can register in this way. Everything changes, we change, our relatives, objects, the nature that surrounds us. It is our imagination that determines what and how we register. You just have to sit down and answer the question of what ?, where? when ?, how often? and we have a plan. Simple scenarios in which objects are people and the subject of their growing up and development are not too logistically demanding - we choose a convention, set a schedule and consistently implement it. Such projects usually last a long time and have no fixed ending. We cyclically add new shots by building an open collection.
It's different when the project concerns the previously mentioned time-lapse movie. The implementation should be preceded by a detailed plan and the number of questions that we have to answer is big. Simply a lot of things is to be foreseen. So if at the sight of a well-made time-lapse we fall into ecstasy, let us know that the implementation of such a recording is not difficult at all, and it can bring a lot of satisfaction if you have spent enough time ... anticipating.
Soon more about this.
